Appleton is the maiden name of my maternal grandmother. The name is English and was at various times spelled Appleton, Appelton and Appulton. The first Appleton of our familiy to come to the new world was Samuel Appleton.
The Appletons settled in Ipswich, MA and there are still many members of the family living in the New England area.
It appears that Samuel Appleton was a descendant of King Henry I of England. Other Americans who trace their ancestry to Samuel Appleton include Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States, and Jane Means Appleton, who was the wife of Franklin Pierce, 14th president of the United States.
